Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a lab technique that allows the doctor to evaluate the genetics of an embryo.  It is often recommended when there are known inheritable gene defects in a family, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia. Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) can only be used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization and allows genetics experts to identify embryos with abnormalities before being implanted into the uterus to prevent the passage of these genetic diseases or abnormalities from parent to child.
