Tips for Surviving the Two Week Wait

By REACH Fertility

If you’ve been trying to conceive, the two weeks between your embryo transfer or insemination and your first pregnancy test can seem like the longest two weeks of your life. The stress and anxiety over whether or not you’ll get a positive pregnancy test after the weeks of tests and treatments can feel overwhelming. But there are ways to make the two week wait easier to handle. In their latest blog post, the fertility experts of REACH fertility offer a few tips on how to handle the two week wait to make it just a little more bearable.

Disconnect During the Wait

It can be tempting to google and dissect every possible pregnancy symptom, but it’s something you should stay away from. Every woman’s fertility is unique and there is a huge amount of misinformation online. Try to resist the urge to google every possible pregnancy symptom – it can only make things worse.

Another reason to disconnect? Social media. Seeing all of your friends and family post pictures of their little ones while you’re already worried about whether this time will be the time you get a positive pregnancy test can cause undue stress. Don’t want to stay off social media completely? Try snoozing friends who you know have children until you’re ready to see their posts again.

Don’t Overanalyze Symptoms

During those two weeks, you may want to analyze any symptom you’re having to see if it may be pregnancy related, but you may want to take any sign of these symptoms with a grain of salt. Many early pregnancy symptoms are very similar to the hormonal changes that happen between ovulation and your next period. Don’t let “feeling like you’re pregnant” create extra stress or anxiety – you won’t know for sure until you get a positive pregnancy test.

Avoid Premature Pregnancy Tests

Speaking of pregnancy tests, avoid taking them before the end of the two week wait. While you might think getting a positive pregnancy test early on could make the two week wait more bearable, the truth is that you’re unlikely to get a positive result before your first missed period.

Practice Some Self Care

Between the doctor’s appointments, tests, and injections, it’s easy to forget about self-care when you’re undergoing fertility treatments. Take some time during this two week wait to focus on YOU! Feel free to pamper yourself a little bit, getting a massage or a manicure. You can also practice relaxation techniques or get in some light exercise to help with feelings of anxiety or stress.

Keep Busy

Whatever you do, don’t spend the two week wait sitting and staring at the clock! Stay busy during this time to help keep your mind off of it as well as help the time feel like it’s passing faster. Try reconnecting with some friends over lunch, catching the latest movie with your partner, or finally get around to organizing the garage.

While the two week wait can be stressful, there are a variety of things you can do to make it a little easier. Whether you completely disconnect, choose to focus on self-care, or use a mix of these tips, make sure to do what will work best for you.
