Physician Spotlight: Dr. Lauren Johnson
Dr. Lauren Johnson joined REACH fertility clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina about six years ago, but she’s been in North Carolina her whole life. An avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Johnson is grateful that the Charlotte area has several public parks. She also loves the big city perks and small town feel Charlotte is known for with access to restaurants, sporting events and Broadway shows. These perks have become more commonplace in the last few years as Charlotte has grown rapidly.
The growth Charlotte has experienced can also be seen at REACH. “As Charlotte’s population has grown, we have certainly seen an increase in the number of patients needing treatment for infertility,” she says. Luckily, as Charlotte has grown she has also seen many changes in the field of reproductive endocrinology which have allowed her to help even more patients. One of the most important changes, she believe, is in the freezing process – vitrification has made it possible to more effectively freeze eggs and embryos. "The ability to freeze embryos has allowed for more extensive genetic screening of embryos and has improved the safety of in vitro fertilization. Furthermore, this technology has expanded options for patients with cancer who need to preserve their fertility prior to cancer treatment."
Dr. Lauren Johnson hopes to see even more advancements in the field of reproductive endocrinology – especially in slowing down the decline in women’s fertility. "I would love to see more research into extending women’s natural fertility. Women start to have declines in their egg count at age 35. Egg count and quality are dramatically lower among women in their 40’s. Currently, there is no way to stop or slow that process." If this could be achieved, millions of couples who struggle to build a family would be helped.
She has seen patients struggle to build a family first hand at REACH’s Charlotte fertility clinic – each struggle being one that has touched her deeply. She has been fortunate enough to build strong relationships and lasting bonds with her patients. "Infertility treatment is very personal and for some patients, it can be a lengthy process," she says. "I enjoy building relationships with patients, and I get to know my patients well. It is often bittersweet when my patients conceive and return to the care of their obstetricians because that means that I don’t get to see them anymore!"
As for those currently struggling with infertility, Dr. Lauren Johnson has an important piece of advice: “You are not alone! Surround yourself with friends and family who will support you on your fertility journey. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. That’s why we are here!”
